What: Fire Tending & Volunteering with WaterFire Columbus

When: Friday, September 17, 2010 6:30 pm - 10:00 pm

Where: Genoa Park (west side of Scioto River on the riverfront in front of COSI). You MAY be able to find parking on Washington Blvd, but you’ll probably need to park in the COSI lot or at a parking meter nearby. You can walk or bike from W. Broad to Washington Blvd and take the ramp down to the river, or walk down the amphitheater steps from Washington Blvd. to the river. If you don’t find us right there, walk upstream to the area below the Broad Street bridge where the boats are moored.

Details: There will be a brief volunteer orientation and training to familiarize Columbus Gives Back volunteers with safety precautions, procedures, etc. Volunteers might help from shore with communications, greeting, VIP hosting, and various other tasks. We also may be helping to light and tend the woodburning braziers, which will involve riding on boats along the river.

What to wear: It’s important to protect ourselves from the heat, flame and heavy firewood we might be working with, and we wear black so we don’t distract from the fires. The following dress code is required:

  • black cotton shirt (long-sleeve is best)
  • black cotton pants
  • dark closed toe shoes
  • cotton or leather work gloves (to protect from splinters and burns – we have some available, but you may wish to bring your own)
  • safety glasses (provided by WaterFire)
  • drinking water (we’ll have some on hand, but you might want to have your own) • no nylon or polyester (can melt and cause burns if ignited by a spark or flame)
  • no sandals (toes can be hurt by dropped firewood)
  • life jackets are provided by WaterFire

About WaterFire: WaterFire on the Mile is a volunteer-operated public art project sponsored by several Columbus businesses. WaterFire events are held on several evenings each year between May and October and feature wood-burning fires in a series of floating, steel braziers anchored in the Scioto River at Genoa Park (behind COSI).
